ETHERI
As an Etheri, Mari lacks physical strength and mana control. She feels destined to play the supporting role for her partner Rhu (a natural talent and future Lord of Newhaven) and her cousin Junie (the confident and beautiful one). But when Mari learns that Junie is a member of the Blaze—a mysterious criminal organization—she isn’t sure how to move forward.
Mari finds herself learning about the Blaze and gets embroiled in their misadventures. By the time Junie’s identity is leaked to the Etheri villages and the Blaze comes under attack, Mari is no longer convinced that she can pick a side, but failing to do so begins to endanger not just herself, but the people she loves. If I did what Rhu wanted, and stopped involving myself with the Blaze entirely, would that just mean avoiding conflict instead of addressing it? At the same time, avoiding the Blaze just made logical sense—the Blaze was conflict.
My tone concerned him, and he gently but firmly pushed me back, holding up each of my arms and scanning me for injuries; his eyes darted methodically, and when they didn’t see anything, they searched my face. Whatever he saw there, I watched in real time as it broke a little piece of his heart. One more disappointment for the record books.
I searched for Junie’s thoughts and was pleasantly surprised to find her not far away. She was sitting in what looked like a stale white waiting room, humming to herself and tapping her hands on her knees to the rhythm. Another Etheri in the same white outfit was keeping watch. Junie’s humming went up a pitch, seeming quite pleased. “Why, hello,” she mused. “I see you’re not dead, so that’s nice.”
