Productive Outlets: Channeling Anxiety

I once read that anxiety can be useful. When our ancestors were by the campfire, the sudden feeling of being watched by a predatory animal spurred them into necessary action. Living with anxiety, we may know very well that there isn't actually a lion stalking us—or anything else, for that matter—but we can still use the energy to fuel productive actions.
Whether your goal is to distract yourself and calm your mind, or to channel your anxious energy into physical movement, here are some options for working through anxiety in healthy ways.
Exercise
If you feel like there's something to run from, you might as well run! Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and tension.
If you're like me, and strenuous activity isn't necessarily your thing, this might just look like taking a walk outside and getting some fresh air, or doing some stretches to limber up.
Baby steps are okay. When's the last time you stood from your desk? Go get a glass of water and pet the dog. Stretch your arms and take a few calming breaths.

Creative Pursuits
Nothing like turning your anxiety into art!
This could be something more cerebral, like writing or solving puzzles, or something more hands-on, like working with clay or doing one of those fancy adult coloring books. Your goal might be to take your mind off of your stress and anxiety, or you might be actively channeling it into your creative project. Either way, art is a healthy expression of your feelings.

Hobbies
As a certain someone in Etheri: Sapphire would say, "you should definitely have a hobby."
A sense of accomplishment and ease is inevitable when you're working on a hobby you enjoy. Ideally, you should have at least one hobby that is meant only to bring you joy, regardless of whether or not it can be monetized or you are "skilled." It's all about fun!

Practical Support: Volunteering
If you've got the time and the means, volunteerism is a fantastic way to rejuvenate your spirits and settle some anxiety.
Did you know that some animal shelters will let you volunteer by... petting the animals? Sign me up!
You can also practice little acts of kindness with other people or with animals. Filling a bird feeder is a kind act that makes you and the birds feel good.

Financial Support: Donating
If you've got the resources, you might also consider a monetary donation to a cause you support. Just be sure to research where your money is going and be sure that the money is being used responsibly!
Charitable donations are one small way we can take direct action about social, environmental, or other issues that matter to us.
Spa Day
And, of course, you can always try unwinding with a nice spa day—as glamorous or inexpensive as you like!
For me, this means a chill day of self-care at home. Here are my must-haves.
Dark chocolate
Shower steamers
A face mask
Gin and tonic
No matter how you work through your anxiety, I know one thing for certain:
You got this.
